TIMBER PILE RESTORATIONIdaho Transportation Dept.Cursory visual inspection shows no apparent problems. More thorough inspection indicates a large hollow void in the timber pile.

Pile preparation with water blasting removes unsound wood damaged in this case by dry rot. Note drill holes.

Remove all unsound wood; water pressure roughly 5,000 – 6,000 psi.

Following water blasting, a chainsaw was used to “clean-up” rough edges.

Only sound wood should remain.

Still considered load-bearing, in this case roughly 60% of the original pile is left intact.

Robert Moses BridgeFORMS AS DELIVERED

Pile forms are delivered banded on a pallet.

Round forms ship nested.

Robert Moses BridgeINSTALLING THROUGH-WALL PUMP PORTS

Drill hole in fiberglass jacket.

Through-wall pump port installed.

Ports are installed every 4 - 5 feet on alternating sides of the form.

Robert Moses BridgePLACING FORMS

Placement of foam backer rod.

2” of foam is used for a 1” annular space.

Epoxy being applied to female side of tongue and groove closure.

The form is spread (exercised) to start the fit around the pile.

The form is spread to fit around the pile, and returns back into shape when released.

The epoxy gel seals the tongue and groove closure.

Tongue engages the groove as the ratchet straps are tightened, displacing the epoxy gel and reinforcing the connection.

Robert Moses BridgeBUTTONING UP FORMS

Once the form is on the pile, additional ratchet straps are used to close up the jacket.

Self-tapping screws are used to reinforce the connection.

Fiberglass forms are lightweight and easy to install; they are easily handled by one person.

A completed form showing exposed pump port, ready for filling.

Robert Moses BridgePOUR FUNNEL & GRAVITY FILLING OF FORMS

Pour Funnel assembly.

Gravity feed – bottom seal.

Translucent fiberglass forms allow for a visual indication that the fill material is flowing into the annulus.

Holes drilled for demonstration purposes show water displaced by epoxy fill material.

Water is completely displaced by epoxy fill.

Robert Moses BridgeCORE SAMPLE DEMONSTRATION

To determine the voids and cracks were completely filled with the epoxy material, a 2” hole was drilled through the rehabilitated pile.

The drilled-out core demonstrates the complete infiltration of voids in the wood by epoxy fill.
