Milestones in the development of photography.
1

1800
Thomas Hedgewood places opaque objects on leather treated with silver nitrate. If exposed to strong light, the image would deteriorate rapidly. He called his results ‘sun pictures’.

1834
Henry Fox Talbot makes permanent negative images with silver chloride soaked paper fixed with a salt solution. Contact printing these would create positive images.

1877
Louis Ducos Du Hauron creates the first subtractive colour print. He used a pigment ink process.

1900
The first camera for the mass market is introduced, the Kodak Brownie.

1923
The first high quality 35mm camera is created by German company, Leitz. They marketed it as the Leica.

1935
Kodachrome, the first multi-layered colour film is developed. This allows photographers to use colour in their work.

1959
Nikon introduce their Nikon F. It’s bayonet mount lenses enable lenses to be change quickly.

1963
Polaroid develop the first colour instant film.

1970s
This decade sees the development of auto-exposure, zoom lenses, TTL, winders and motor drive in cameras.

1981
Sony announce their revolutionary ‘Mavica’. The camera stored images on a standard floppy disk.
It was released 8 years later.

1985
The first auto focus SLR system is marketed by Minolta.

2000
By the turn of the century, film is rapidly being replaced by, the more practical, digital memory card.
